Anifiel banned them all from the pavilion while he spoke quietly and urgently to his battle companion. Tofiel watched the pair of Angels smile at each other as they talked. The strange feeling she had come to dread fluttered in her stomach once more.

"What ails you, Tofiel? I see by your face that all is not well."

Tofiel was upset with herself that she wished Camael were far from her. It was not the brilliant Angel's fault that she suffered a turmoil she could not explain. She made sure to have a reassuring smile on her face as she turned to face her companion. Camael's brilliance made Tofiel's smile become one of complete sincerity. She wondered if this was how Anifiel felt when he looked upon Finnian.

"I am well," she told the bright Angel. "I worried for Vithius and Anifiel, but I see that they are soon to be fully recovered. It is a good moment. One which we owe to the human, Ryan."

Camael's expression was stony as he glanced aside at the human who paced anxiously at the borders of the pavilion. "He touched Vithius in a way Angels are not meant to be touched. I will not give thanks for that."

Camael's stubbornness was not easily overcome. Tofiel decided to try, though. She liked the young human.

"He was able to awaken Vithius when all others had failed. Perhaps his unorthodox methods were the only choice."

Tofiel hesitated, and then lightly gripped her companion's shoulder. Camael's eyes shot to her, wide and shocked. Tofiel nearly retracted her hand, but she nervously kept the grip. Camael's skin, though stretched over hardened muscle, was far softer than Tofiel expected. It made the odd feeling inside her grow stronger. "Do not judge Ryan poorly for doing what he thought best to help Vithius. The human's intentions are good, I believe."

"What I believe is that Anifiel was right: this human has brought corruption to Heaven." Camael deliberately stepped to the side, breaking Tofiel's hold. "What has come over you?" he demanded of the taller Angel. Camael appeared rattled, something Tofiel had not seen before. "Angels do not derive pleasure or satisfaction from physical contact. The purity of our love is all that is required, not the carnal corruption championed by the Beneath!"

Tofiel's heart shattered. "Camael, please, you interpret too much—"

"I know what I see and what I feel." Camael's light blue eyes were cold but Tofiel thought she also saw the pain of betrayal in their depths. "Corruption has found its way into Heaven and it has touched my fellow warriors," Camael choked out. "I will not let Heaven fall because of a weakened Army."

Camael looked again to Ryan and his expression was not kind. Tofiel recognized the look from battle. What had she set in motion by daring to be bold with her companion?

"Camael, what do you intend?" she asked worriedly. She knew Camael well. Her friend had been robbed of his opportunity to replace Vithius when the dark-haired Angel had awoken. Camael would need another way to win Anifiel's favor.
